The Abbott’s have arrived!!!!!!

Dear neighbour

I am sure you are aware that The Anchor has been through a fairly torrid time of late, with a number of licensees, no doubt all with good intentions who have sadly been unable to turn Wingham’s most prominent and historic Pub into a viable business. With so many Pubs closing in these difficult times it is a real leap of faith that leads us to take on The Anchor, however it is also a very exciting time for us all, we are determined to be successful and intend to be here for many years to come. In fact early indications show that there is a real appetite for a family run pub in the village and we are very pleased with how things have gone so far.

We already have strong links with Wingham, having come from the nearby village of Staple, all of our three children, Bethany Polly and Robbie have attended Wingham Primary School, I myself having been a Parent Governor and involved with the school PTFA for a number of years. We are very community minded and we hope this experience will help us in turning The Anchor around.

Enough about us, let’s talk about our plans for The Anchor. We fully understand that times are changing and that no pub can survive selling beer alone. That’s why we intend to diversify, nothing too radical, but enough to ensure The Anchor serves the majority of the community and gives most people a reason to come and see us and also makes it an attractive destination for people to travel to.

The Anchor will comprise three parts;

The Anchor Pub

This will be the traditional English Pub, offering 3 Fine Real Ales, Lagers, Spirits as well as a good range of quality wines to suit everyone’s taste and budget. We will ensure it is a friendly place to relax and have a drink or two, it will have a very traditional English Country Pub atmosphere. We have live music on Sunday afternoons, 3 til 5pm, which is already proving to be extremely popular.

The Pub Garden will be refurnished and made into an attractive, well-kept and comfortable area for our customers to enjoy, as and when the weather allows.

The Anchor Café Bar

During the daytime from 10.30 am we serve freshly ground Coffee from our newly installed Barista machine as well as Teas, Breakfasts, Snacks and Cakes.

From 12 noon until 3pm we serve lunches comprising traditional English and continental dishes including healthy eating and vegetarian options.

In the afternoons in summertime we will provide traditional Kentish Cream Teas, Snacks, Cakes and Sandwiches.

The Evening Dinner service starts at 6pm until 9pm to accommodate families. We provide a full menu as well as specials. Children are well catered for.

Sunday Lunches are served from 12pm until 6pm (last orders 5.30pm) to ensure those that have been working hard in the garden or been out for the day do not miss out. The cost is £9.95 for two courses

The Kitchen is closed on Mondays.

Wherever possible we use locally sourced produce and ingredients in order to support local businesses in the area.

Anchor Arts Centre

Perhaps the most exciting and ambitious part of our plans, The Anchor has a wonderful function room to the rear of the building. We have just finished refurbishing this area want it to become a community resource for local people and groups that wish to hold meetings or stage small events, such as Plays, Dance, Poetry Readings and music, where numbers attending are too small to justify the use of a larger venue. The Hall will also be available for hire for private parties and functions. The two private events we have held recently have been very successful and everyone agrees it is a beautiful room, The Roaring Log Fire really adds to the atmosphere.

We intend to stage Acoustic Music Events ourselves focusing on Folk, Country, Jazz and Singer Songwriter acts and maybe even some Stand Up Comedy. We wish to be responsible and considerate neighbours so you can rest assured there will be no noisy Disco’s, Rock Bands or Loud Drum kits etc. We will do everything we can to ensure that noise levels are kept to a minimum so as not to disturb our neighbours, especially those living close by.

So there you have it, this is our vision for The Anchor, and one that we hope will re-establish it as a successful local pub. Obviously we won’t be able to do everything all at once, it will take time to evolve, we hope that we will have your support with our new venture and would welcome your comments, suggestions or concerns, please pop in and see us.

It will be very different this time, we promise!!!
